How it all started

Anya postpartum recovery founder story

It took having my own baby to realize how little support and preparation our society offers new moms for postpartum recovery. The first months are an exhilarating, love-filled time, but childbirth is also a major medical event and I was not prepared for recovery.

I had a pregnancy plan, a birth plan, a parenting plan —yet no plan to restore and heal my body after birth. I was unprepared for the effects of sleep deprivation, the emotional highs and lows, painful sex and hair loss. I didn’t know what I didn’t know.

The more I researched the more I realized the gap in maternal care between the US and other countries around the world, where through cultural traditions and ongoing, comprehensive care, women are cared for during this critical period.

I made my own recipes

Combining ingredients traditionally used for centuries around the world and my background in nutrition, I started concocting my own tinctures and teas. I began to find relief — I had more energy, I was producing more breastmilk. I began to feel like myself again.  But no one has time to brew things on their stove for 24 hours. There had to be a better way.

Anya was born.

It began with going into womens' homes and asking them about their experience. Moms showed us dozens of products that didn’t work for them or they didn’t like, and most often, moms said they couldn’t find anything that was safe while breastfeeding.

Then we asked over 2,000 moms about their postpartum experience.  The results were overwhelming — too many women struggle silently and assume this is how it’s supposed to be.

Named after my own mom, Anya makes women's health a priority by providing the information and solutions every mother should have.

Meet our Chief Impact Officer

Pregnant and preparing for her own postpartum journey, actress and activist Freida Pinto joined Anya as Chief Impact Officer to drive awareness to women's health needs during this critical period of time.

Growing up in India where the tradition is for mothers to be supported and taken care of after birth, Freida leads our non-profit efforts to make support accessible to all women.

And we brought in the experts.

We have partnered with OB/GYNs, nutritionists, herbalists, lactation consultants, pediatricians, dermatologists and psychiatrists to bring Anya to life.
